Flying on a private jet is a different experience from flying on a commercial plane. The whole process is more streamlined, and rules are looser. Things are more convenient since the service is targeted mainly to busy businessmen and wealthy celebrities – people who value their time more than their money. However, that does not mean that you can book a flight and board the jet without any worry. There is still a protocol that you should follow. It includes checking if you have the necessary documents for your flight.
Like in commercial flights, these requirements will ensure the success and legality of your trip. Here are the things you need to prepare if you are planning to fly on a private jet soon.
A Valid ID or Passport
Passports are one of your most important travel documents. It contains information about you, like your name, date of birth, nationality, photograph, and signature.
Passports are used to verify your country of citizenship. It also allows you to regain entry into that country. Furthermore, countries check passports to confirm your identity.
You can not expect a country to accept a foreigner in their land without confirming their identity first. For all they know, they could be letting a terrorist roam around their country unchecked and undetected. It is why verification of your identity is crucial- it is essential for national security and imposing the law. So remember to double-check the details in your passport. Make sure all the information provided is correct.
Another important thing to remember when preparing your passport is to check for its validity. Countries check this to ensure that you will not be overstaying your passport’s validity. To know if your passport will be accepted, see if it will still be valid for six months after you depart from that country. If it is about to expire, then renew it first.
Domestic trips are not as strict as international flights. When traveling within the country, or within an area with open border agreements, any authorized photo ID such as a driver’s license will do.
Visa
A visa is a conditional authorization granted to a foreigner to stay in a country for a specific amount of time. It also has categorization depending on the purpose of your visit to the country. Common types of visas are student, work, and transit visas.
You might need to apply for one to meet immigration requirements. In some countries, you can apply for a visa once you arrive but in others, a visa application will be required before you are permitted to enter.
Check the visa requirements of your destination before you book a flight. Also, check with local authorities to know the procedures required.
Your charter operator will ask you for a copy of your passport and visa to create a passenger manifest. The manifest will be used to confirm the legality of your trip. When you arrive at the fixed base operator (FBO), they will ask you to present your documents. Then, they will compare them with the manifest to confirm your identity. On some destinations, this pre-clear will remove the verification that would otherwise be done when you land at the airport. Thus, avoiding any possible inconveniences.
However, if you did not gain a clearance you will not be permitted to board the aircraft. Worse, immigration officers may come to you for spot-checking.
Documents for Pets
Private jet passengers have the liberty to bring their pets on their trip, but they are still subjected to restrictions. The animals should have necessary documents and immunization records to be allowed on the aircraft.
The main requirements are a pet passport, and they should be microchipped. On top of that, some countries have additional requirements. In the UK, for example, a pet that has not received a shot of anti-rabies will not be allowed on the flight. Furthermore, dogs should be wormed a day before the flight.
Your Luggage
There are more items allowed in a private flight than in commercial ones. For example, you can bring your own liquids, including alcoholic drinks. Moreover, the number of things you can carry will depend on the size of the aircraft and the number of passengers. A larger jet with fewer passengers will allow you to bring more. On some, you will not even need to bring a carry-on bag since your luggage will be accessible in the cabin.
But, this does not mean that you can skip the checking. The good thing is, you do not have to wait in line. Since there are fewer people in the terminal, there is no queue. Therefore, luggage checks are done quickly. As long as you follow the size and weight limit, you will not have any problem.
Airplane Ticket
The booking process in charter operators is different than in commercial airlines. One key difference is the lack of requirement for an airplane ticket. When you book a flight on a private jet, instead of a ticket, you will receive an itinerary. It includes details about your booking references, route and destination, contact details of your crew, and the tail number of your aircraft. It also holds a guide to get to your FBO that may include parking information.
Sometimes, you will also be given a number called a Prior Permission Requirement (PRR). The PRR will be used to identify you as a passenger upon your arrival in the FBO.
Recap
The main advantage of private jet flights over commercial ones is that it is more streamlined. Things are done faster and processes are quicker. However, if you did not follow the few imposed rules and requirements, your supposed-to-be-relaxing trip could still turn into a disaster. So, if you do not want to be stressed, then you should check and provide these documents and requirements. You would not want your flight to be canceled or rescheduled just because you forgot your ID or your pet dog was not vaccinated, right?
