On a commercial flight, you are typically allowed to bring one luggage bag along with a smaller carry-on bag. This rule is imposed to ensure that all passengers will get a space for their things. On a charter plane flight, however, you do not need to share space with hundreds of strangers. Instead, there is only you and your family or company. The question is, does this mean you can bring more luggage? If so, what is the limit?

The answer varies. Sometimes it is a yes, sometimes a no. There are a bunch of factors that are considered when deciding how much luggage a passenger can bring on a private jet flight. These factors include the size of the jet, the number of passengers, and weight restrictions. The aircraft model and design also affect this to some extent. Different sizes and models have varied capacities which are measured by cubic feet.

On a blog by PrivateFly, they explained how much luggage a person can bring for different sizes of aircraft. They also listed some plane models that have noteworthy qualities.

Here are some things they said with additional bits of information.

On Turboprop Aircraft

Unlike jets, turboprops use traditional propellers. Thus, they are slower and noisier than a jet. Fortunately, they have a redeeming quality that could make a person choose them over the faster jets. Turboprops can offer more room and space than jets similar to their size. Therefore, they can carry more.

Prime examples are the Beechcraft King Air and the Pilatus PC. The former offers an interior that can be customized depending on the client’s needs. Large models like the Beechcraft King Air 350 and 360 also exist. They can carry eight passengers and boast 55 cubic feet of luggage space. It is spacious enough for one large luggage bag per passenger, plus about five more. Aside from that, there are two compartments behind the engines that can offer more storage.

The latter should be your choice if you are traveling with oversized luggage. The Pilatus PC-12 and PC-24 are famous for their broad, rear cargo door that allows easy loading of large items like bikes.

On Very Light Jets

Very light jets, also called personal jets or microjets, as their name suggests, are small. Thus, there is only limited space for luggage. But, some models have found ways to increase their storage capacity. They converted the corners and even the nose into cabinets and lockers. Bear in mind that these spaces are located in unusual spots. It means that softer bags that are flexible are more ideal than hard-cased suitcases. They will let you maximize the little space that you have.

Luggage Limits on Private Jets

For numerical comparisons, the Embraer Phenom 100 has a capacity of 53 cubic feet while a Citation Mustang only has 37. In contrast to the turboprops mentioned above, they offer a bit less storage in exchange for more speed.

On Small Light Jets and Super Light Jets

Small and super light jets can carry more people and luggage than very light jets. Up to eight people can board these aircraft, which is why they are popular choices for business trips. Although, the additional space provided is still not enough to accommodate a cabin attendant, the extra room for storage is still welcome.

Some models that belong in these categories are the Cessna Citation CJ2, Citation XLS, and Gulfstream G100. The CJ2 is a small light jet that offers 74 cubic feet of storage space while the XLS has 90. With this capacity, each passenger can bring more than one bag, and the compartment will still hold them all.

On Midsize Jets

Midsize jets are used for longer flights like intercontinental ones. But, you can opt for them even for short trips if you want extra storage space. With the size of these 8 – 16 seater jets comes bigger cabins and higher luggage capacity.

The Bombardier Challenger 350, Citation Latitude, and Citation Sovereign have capacities of 106, 127, ad 135 cubic feet respectively. From here, it is visible that midsize jets have a capacity that, or almost, doubles that of those on light jets.

If your flight has fewer passengers than the seats available, you might even be able to bring up to four or five bags. Aside from bags, these aircraft can also carry large items such as bikes and music or sports equipment. The Bombardier Challenger 850 can even transport coffins, which can be done by only a few private jets.

On Long-Range Heavy Jets

If VIP converted airliners do not exist, these jets would be considered the kings of the skies. They can carry up to 19 people and offer luxuriousness and comfort fit for the upper echelons of society.

Aside from the excellent service included in them, the space within these jets is impressive. Some even have room for a master bedroom, a bathroom, and a dedicated dining room. With the amount of space those rooms occupy, it is impressive that these jets still have lots left for storage.

Luggage Limits on Private Jets

For instance, the Gulfstream 350 has 169 cubic feet for storage. This is already higher than any of the aircraft mentioned above. But, for long-range jets, this is still quite a mediocre number. The Gulfstream G650 and Bombardier Global 6000 have a whopping 195 cubic feet of storage. Meanwhile, Gulfstream V has 226 cubic feet. This allows four times more luggage than what can be brought in a light jet. If you think it can not get any better, then you are mistaken. For most of these jets, the storage area is accessible from the cabin. You do not need to segregate things depending on how much you would need them during the flight since you can access them all freely.

On VIP Converted Airliners or Executive Liners

The most expensive jets on the market. You can call these flying palaces. Inside these jets are huge, spacious cabins, multiple rooms – each for a specific purpose, opulent interiors, and of course, plenty of storage. If you are wealthy enough to afford one executive liner, then you do not need to worry about how much you can bring. These jets can carry up to 80 pieces of luggage.
